Description
Rare Variation American Flyer 1931-32 Standard Scale Loco # 4672, Tender # 4693, Runs has hand reverse. Condition is very good and the paint is all original. The locomotive is made of cast iron and the tender is made of cast zinc. The metal drawbar between the loco & tender has a broken piece off the front. 2 of the drive wheels are original and 2 were turned in a machine shop. The 2 main drive side rods are missing. ( 1950's type repair) Pilot wheels were replaced with Lionel wheels from engine # 384 but the wheel support frame is an original American Flyer. On page 36 of "Greenberg's Guide to American Flyer Wide Gauge" there are photos of 3 variations of this engine. This is an additional variation that is not shown. Its valve gear is like the variation version of pictures C&D but the loco has the wheel arrangement of a 2-4-2 engine. The tender is the # 4693 style but has smaller non-flex trucks and is not listed. (The data plate was replaced with a number plate in the factory) The photo on page 43 does not show this variation. The tender has a little bubbling in the cast zinc as well as a tiny casting zinc flake. A former owner added a second Lionel type coupler by drilling a hole in the casting and fastening it with a screw. (Can be removed) The tender came with this engine. Engine is rubber stamped with #4670 on the bottom of the pilot, #4693 is rubber stamped on the bottom of the tender.. This was probably manufactured in 1932 - perhaps for a special sales account.
