A collection of the First Day Ceremony Programs for the first stamps to be issued in the Black Heritage series, 27 stamps 1978 to 2003. In addition to the programs, each bearing at least one of the stamps with the ceremony cancellation, many ancillary First Day programs are included. For instance, the January 31, 1992 program for the W.E.B. DuBois stamp is included as it was also an opportunity to honor Thomas Blackshear, the designer of the five stamps from 1987 through 1990. Included are 5 First Day of Issue cachéd envelopes for the Sojourner Truth stamp. Ceremonies for several of the first stamps in the series were held in churches (Tubman in the Metro African Methodist Episcopal; King in Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist; Banneker in the Annapolis Asbury United Methodist; Woodson in the Shiloh Baptist); Jesse Jackson gave the benediction for Robinson at the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame.
