Up for sale is this delightful Souvenir Label issued by the Polonus Philatelic Society (PPS) of Chicago.  The label was issued to promote POLPEX 1962, the stamp show taking place in March of 1962.  The theme of the show was the PPS “Honors Polish Heroes of the Civil War.”
    The label features Union General
    Włodzimierz
    Krzyżanowski, sword in hand,
leading his troops in battle.  An allegory of History stands behind him, about to crown him with a victors’ wreath.  Above the scene is a reproduction of Scott US #985, commemorating the last encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).  At the very top is a line from a Civil War era Camp Song, with a line in English, and the line beneath a translation in Polish.  The label is printed in the colors of the Civil War, Union Blue and Confederate Gray.
    Włodzimierz
    Krzyżanowski
was a Polish Nobleman, born in 1824.  In the late 1840’s, he emigrated to the United States.  He continued his education as an engineer, became active in Republican Party politics, and was a supporter of Abraham Lincoln.  When the Civil War began, and President Lincoln called for volunteers,
Krzyżanowski enlisted as a Private, began recruiting large numbers of Polish immigrants, and was soon the Colonel of the Polish Legion.  Krzyżanowski and the Legion fought with valor in many battles throughout the war.  Krzyżanowski mustered out of the Army in March, 1865, with the rank of Brevet Brigadier General.
